Yes. ChatGPT output is the specific thing Turnitin's AI writing detection was built to catch, and Turnitin lists the GPT-5 family and GPT-4o among the models it covers. It works entirely from the text you submit. It cannot see your ChatGPT account, your prompt history or your browser, and there is no watermark hidden in ChatGPT's writing for it to find, so what it produces is a statistical judgment about your prose rather than a trace of where the prose came from.
That difference matters more than it sounds, because it decides what does and does not change your result. Paraphrasing changes the text, so it can change the score. Using a different account, clearing your history or pasting through a plain text editor changes nothing at all, because none of those things were ever visible to Turnitin.
Does Turnitin detect ChatGPT?
It detects text that looks like ChatGPT wrote it. Turnitin's model is trained to separate two statistical signatures: the highly probable, consistent word choices that language models produce, and the more idiosyncratic patterns of human writing. ChatGPT is the single largest source of the first kind, and it is the reason the feature exists at all.
What Turnitin publishes is a percentage of the document it believes was generated or modified by an AI writing tool, shown as an indicator inside the Similarity Report. It is not a lookup against a database of ChatGPT outputs, and Turnitin says so plainly. We walk through the segment-scoring mechanism in detail in how Turnitin detects AI writing.
The honest caveat is that a statistical judgment is not proof. Turnitin itself writes that the tool "does not make a determination of misconduct" and that the percentage "should not be used as the sole basis for action or a definitive grading measure by instructors".
Which ChatGPT models does Turnitin detect?
Turnitin publishes a model list, and it is more specific than most people expect. On the OpenAI side it currently names:

It lists competing models too, including Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.5, several Gemini 3 versions, Grok 4.1, LLaMA 4 Maverick, Mistral Large 3 and Deepseek v3.2. Switching from ChatGPT to another assistant does not move you outside the trained set, which is the thing most "use this model instead" advice quietly gets wrong.
One real limit is language. Turnitin's AI detection runs on English, Spanish and Japanese only, and its ability to catch paraphrasing tools is English-only even within that. It also needs at least 300 words of prose before it will return anything.
Can Turnitin detect ChatGPT if you paraphrase?
Often, yes. Turnitin states that its detector "has been trained and tested to detect leading paraphraser and bypasser tools", and it refuses to name them, on the grounds that publishing a list "would make it easier for students to evade our system". So the capability is claimed, the scope is deliberately undisclosed, and nobody outside the company can measure it.
What we can say is why light paraphrasing tends not to help. The detector is not matching strings, it is measuring predictability. Swapping words for synonyms and reordering clauses leaves the underlying structure intact: the same even sentence lengths, the same flat register, the same idea restated rather than developed. Turnitin names almost exactly this pattern when it lists the writing most likely to be misread, including "text that has been paraphrased without developing new ideas".
Which points at the only durable fix, and it is not a tooling fix. Prose that varies, argues and goes somewhere reads differently to a statistical model and to a human marker, for the same reason in both cases. That usually means doing the thinking before the drafting, working your own angle into shape first rather than asking a model for a finished essay and then rewording it. Does ChatGPT put a watermark in its text?
No, and this is worth settling because a lot of advice assumes otherwise.
OpenAI does watermark some of what it generates. Its content provenance work combines C2PA Content Credentials with Google DeepMind's SynthID, and as of an update dated July 31, 2026 it covers images and audio: images generated through ChatGPT, Codex or the API, and now "supported audio generated with OpenAI tools". OpenAI's public verification tool checks images and audio files.
Text is absent from all of it. The July 2026 announcement describes the expansion as going "beyond images" to audio, and text is not part of the scope. The Wall Street Journal reported in August 2024 that OpenAI had built a text watermarking system internally and chosen not to ship it. Two years later there is still no text watermark in any public ChatGPT model.
So there is nothing embedded in ChatGPT prose for Turnitin, or anyone else, to read. Every claim you will see about detecting a hidden ChatGPT watermark in text is describing something that does not exist. Turnitin's own account agrees: its method is statistical, with no database and no watermark involved.
Can Turnitin detect ChatGPT if you copy and paste?
Copying and pasting is irrelevant to Turnitin's AI detection, because Turnitin only ever receives the finished file. It has no visibility into how the text arrived in your document.
There is one exception, and it is a different product. Turnitin Clarity's Writing Report records pasting activity, replays a timeline of the document developing, and can surface a student's AI chat interactions where the AI assistant is enabled. That is provenance rather than detection, and it exists only inside Clarity assignments. An ordinary Turnitin submission is still scored from the finished text alone. Grammarly Authorship and Google Docs version history work on a similar principle, with their own limits.
Can professors tell if you used ChatGPT?
Sometimes, and usually not from the score alone. The AI writing indicator is restricted: Turnitin states that "the AI writing detection indicator and report are not visible to students", and that only instructors and administrators can see it. Some institutions disable the feature entirely, in which case nobody sees a number.
What experienced markers actually notice tends to be simpler than a percentage. Writing that does not match your previous work, citations to sources that do not exist or do not say what the paper claims, a confident essay from a student who was lost in the seminar, generic argument that never engages the set reading. Those are the things that start conversations. The detector score is often the confirmation someone reaches for afterward, not the trigger. What if Turnitin flags work you wrote yourself?
It happens, and the score is designed in a way that makes it hard to argue with in the moment. Anything between 1% and 19% is suppressed entirely and shown as an asterisk, so you cannot see a low reading. Turnitin's under-1% false positive claim applies only to documents already scored above 20% AI, which is not where a wrongly flagged paper sits. And the company states that the reported number under-reports on purpose: "if we identify that 50% of a document is likely written by an AI tool, it could contain as much as 65% AI writing."
