ChatGPT humanizer: humanize ChatGPT text and the tells it leaves behind

ChatGPT gives itself away on rhythm before it gives itself away on content. This rewrites the pattern, keeps your meaning, and leaves your quotes and numbers alone.

Below: the six tells worth knowing, and an honest comparison of every humanizer in this market, including the one OpenAI now ships inside ChatGPT itself.

AI-pattern score

This is our own AI-pattern score, measured here on sentence rhythm, template phrases, vocabulary variety and passive voice. It is not a GPTZero, Turnitin, Originality.ai, Copyleaks or ZeroGPT result, and it does not predict one. Worth knowing: we also ask the rewrite to vary sentence length, drop template phrases and prefer the active voice, so some of the drop is built in. Read the two panels below, not just the number.

The short answer

A ChatGPT humanizer is a rewriting tool that takes ChatGPT output and rebuilds the properties that make it recognizable: sentence length that barely varies, a narrow set of recurring connectives, and paragraphs built to the same three-part template. It changes how the text moves, not what it says, so your argument, your quotations and your figures come through unchanged. OpenAI now ships a humanizer of its own inside ChatGPT, with modes labelled "Shorten text", "Improve clarity" and "Make it original", and it is a reasonable clarity pass. What no tool in this category can give you, ours included, is a guaranteed detector score, because the detectors are retrained without notice and the one that matters most in United States education exposes no public checker for anyone to test a claim against.

What actually gives it away

The six ChatGPT tells, and what a humanizer does with each

Most pages in this market describe the job as making text "sound human", which tells you nothing about what is being changed. This is the line by line version, including the parts that should come out identical to how they went in.

The tell What it looks like in ChatGPT output What the rewrite does
Sentence length that barely moves Paragraph after paragraph of sentences landing between eighteen and twenty-four words, each with the same subject-verb-object shape. Rebuilt with real variance. A six-word sentence next to a forty-word one is the single strongest signal that a person wrote the passage.
The connective set "Moreover", "Furthermore", "Additionally", "It is important to note", "In conclusion". ChatGPT reaches for the same two dozen joins far more often than a writer does. Replaced with plainer joins, or cut. Most of them are carrying no meaning and the sentence reads better once they are gone.
The three-part paragraph Topic sentence, three supporting clauses, tidy summary. Every paragraph built to the same blueprint, which is why the page feels flat even when the facts are right. Paragraph shape gets varied deliberately. Some end on the evidence with no summary at all, which is how real argument is written.
Symmetrical framing The "not just X, it is Y" construction, and the balanced pair of clauses either side of a comma. ChatGPT produces these at a rate no human writer matches. Broken apart. The rhetorical shape is the tell, so swapping the words inside it changes nothing.
Register flatness Consistently mid-formal, hedged, and free of the specific detail a person who knows the subject would reach for without thinking. Pulled toward a chosen tone. This is also the part that makes the writing better to read, which matters more than any score.
Your facts, quotes and numbers Whatever ChatGPT put there, including anything it invented. Left exactly as they are. A rewrite is a language operation, not a fact check, so a hallucinated source survives it intact. Checking that is still your job.

The distinction that decides whether any of this works is between rewording and restructuring. A paraphraser swaps synonyms, which leaves sentence rhythm and paragraph architecture exactly where they were, and those are the properties a statistical detector reads. This is why people report that running ChatGPT output through a paraphraser sometimes makes the reading experience worse without moving the score: the prose now sits slightly oddly with a human reader while remaining just as uniform to a model. Turnitin names the pattern directly when it lists the writing most likely to be misread, which includes "text that has been paraphrased without developing new ideas".

The last row of that table is the one people skip. Rewriting is a language operation. If ChatGPT invented a citation or a statistic in the draft, the humanized version still contains the invention, now dressed in more convincing prose. We wrote up the wider version of that problem in whether humanized text can still be detected, and the model-by-model differences in which AI is least detectable.

Every option, compared honestly

The ChatGPT humanizers you will actually find, including OpenAI's own

Including the ones cheaper than us and the ones that cost nothing. Each row carries the date we last read it on the vendor's own site, because prices in this market move and a stale figure is worse than none.

Tool What it is Cost What happens to your text
ChatGPT's own AI humanizerChecked Aug 19, 2026 A writing tool inside ChatGPT with three modes: "Shorten text", "Improve clarity" and "Make it original". It is a rewriting prompt with a front end. Included with a ChatGPT account The page states that "Chats may be reviewed and used to improve our AI models"
Grammarly AI humanizerChecked Aug 1, 2026 A free web rewriter, separate from the Grammarly editor. Grammarly also sells an AI detector, so it is on both sides of this. Free web tool Governed by Grammarly account terms
QuillBot AI humanizerChecked Aug 10, 2026 Bundled with the paraphraser most students already have open. Ships its own AI detector alongside it. Free tier; Premium from $8.33/mo billed yearly Governed by QuillBot account terms
ZeroGPT humanizerChecked Jul 31, 2026 Attached to the free detector, which is the reason most people land there. Freemium rather than free. Free tier; paid from $12.99/mo Governed by ZeroGPT account terms
Undetectable.aiChecked Aug 19, 2026 The largest paid competitor in this category. Includes API access on every paid tier, which genuinely beats us. From $5.00/mo billed yearly for 10,000 words Governed by Undetectable.ai account terms
Undetected.ai (this site)Checked Aug 19, 2026 Paid only, one pass over your own text, with a tone selector and our own AI-pattern score on the draft and the rewrite. Free account: 3 runs/day, 9,000 words/mo. Paid plans planned from $9/mo billed yearly for 15,000 words Saved to your history, deletable by you

The most useful thing in that table is the first row, because it is the one nobody in this market mentions. OpenAI added an AI humanizer to ChatGPT's writing tools, describing it simply as making "AI writing sound more natural", with three modes: shorten, improve clarity, and make it original. If all you want is a clarity pass on a draft, it is right there and it costs nothing extra. The reason to think about it before pasting in an unpublished manuscript or a client deliverable is the sentence carried on that same page, which states that chats may be reviewed and used to improve OpenAI's models. That is a normal consumer-product term. It is a different proposition from a tool that does not retain what you submit, and it is the sort of thing worth knowing rather than discovering.

The second thing worth noticing is that two of the free options, QuillBot and Grammarly, sell an AI detector as well as a humanizer. That is not a scandal, but it does mean the same company is being paid on both sides of the question, and it explains why their humanizer copy is more cautious than the copy on sites that only sell one half. We took Grammarly's numbers apart in Grammarly's AI detector against Turnitin.

On price, Undetectable.ai starts lower than we do and includes API access on every paid tier, which we do not. If your requirement is programmatic access on a small budget, that is the honest recommendation, and we set the whole ladder out in Undetectable.ai pricing and the Undetectable.ai alternative comparison. Where we would argue for ourselves is the tone control, the AI-pattern score with its reasons rather than a bare pass claim, and not keeping your text.

How to run it on a draft

Four steps, in the order that actually works

Step 1

Paste prose, not the whole document

Body paragraphs are what the rewrite works on. Leave headings, bullet lists, tables and reference entries out. They are not what gives ChatGPT away, and in academic submissions they are not even scored.

Step 2

Pick the tone before you run it

Academic, Standard, Casual and SEO produce noticeably different output from the same input. Running the default on a piece that needed the academic register is the most common reason a rewrite reads wrong.

Step 3

Read it back against the original

Check that the argument survived, that quoted material is still verbatim, and that no number moved. This is the step people skip, and it is the one that decides whether the output is usable.

Step 4

Edit on top of it

Add one concrete detail a model could not have known: a figure from your own data, a specific example, something you actually observed. That does more for how the piece reads than another pass through any rewriter.

Step four is the one that separates a draft that reads human from a draft that merely scores as human. No rewriting tool can add knowledge that was not in the input, and the absence of specifics is the thing an experienced reader notices first. One real number, one thing you saw happen, one example from your own work: that is the edit that changes how the piece lands. The prompt-side version of the same idea, which gets you a better first draft before any rewriting, is in the prompt that makes AI writing sound human.

Who this is for

Where a ChatGPT humanizer earns what it costs

And where it does not. If none of these describe you, editing the draft yourself does the same job for nothing and teaches you more about your own writing.

People publishing at volume

Marketers and content teams drafting with ChatGPT hit the register problem hardest, because twenty pages in the same voice is obvious in a way one page is not. The volume tiers exist for this case.

Students writing essays

The largest group searching for this, and the one with the most riding on it. The course-policy question and the detector question are separate, and both are covered on the students page.

Non-native English writers

The group most likely to be misread by a detector on work that had no AI in it. Liang et al. (Patterns, 2023) found seven detectors misclassified human-written TOEFL essays 61.3 percent of the time.

Freelancers and agencies

Client contracts increasingly forbid unedited AI copy. A rewrite that removes the ChatGPT rhythm is the difference between delivering a draft and delivering something the client can publish.

Anyone writing long emails and proposals

ChatGPT email drafts are the most recognizable output it produces, because the connective set and the tidy close are compressed into three hundred words. Readers notice before any detector does.

People who just want it to read better

Detection aside, ChatGPT prose is repetitive to read. Rebuilding sentence variance is a straightforward quality improvement, and plenty of people use it for nothing else.

Two of those groups have their own page here, because the questions attached to them are different. Students are dealing with a course policy and an institutional detector they cannot see the output of, which is a governance problem as much as a writing one, and that is covered on the AI humanizer for students page. Teams publishing at volume are dealing with consistency and review workflow instead, which is the AI humanizer for content teams page.

Before you pay for anything

Three things no ChatGPT humanizer can do

It cannot promise a detector score. Every vendor quoting a guaranteed percentage against a named detector is guessing, and the ones quoting Turnitin figures are guessing hardest, because Turnitin sells only to institutions and exposes no public API for anyone to test against. Turnitin has said it trains against "leading paraphraser and bypasser tools" and refuses to name them, precisely so that nobody selling a bypass knows whether they are on the list. The measured accuracy research, including the peer-reviewed study where detectors misread human work less often than human graders did, is collected on the AI detector false positive rate page.

It cannot make writing knowledgeable. A rewrite improves rhythm and register. It does not add evidence, and it does not repair an argument that was thin when ChatGPT produced it. Fluent, well-paced prose that says nothing is still prose that says nothing, and it is now harder for you to notice.

It cannot undo a flag after the fact. If work of yours has already been questioned, rewriting it now is the wrong remedy, and in an academic setting it looks worse than doing nothing. What actually helps is evidence about how the document was written: version history, dated drafts, the notes you took. Detectors infer from finished text; version histories record the process. That case is made in full in how to prove you did not use AI.

What it costs

Working out the tier from what you actually write

Our plans are $9 a month for 15,000 words, $19 for 80,000 and $39 for 250,000, all billed annually, or $12, $24 and $48 month to month, and they are planned rather than on sale. The free account gives you 3 runs a day of up to 1,500 words and 9,000 words a month once you confirm your email address, while you decide. Annual billing is where the discount lives across this whole category, which is why nearly every low headline price you see quoted assumes a twelve month commitment, ours included.

Size the tier from output rather than ambition. A 1,200 word article consumes roughly 1,200 words of allowance, so 15,000 words is about a dozen pieces a month. Teams publishing several times a week run past that quickly, which is what the 80,000 tier is for. If your monthly volume is genuinely unpredictable, the 250,000-word tier at $39 is the one to buy, because nothing here is unlimited and we would rather you bought a ceiling you will not hit than a promise we could not keep. We put real numbers on the whole category in how much an AI humanizer costs, and we compare the paid options directly on the best AI humanizer page.

Frequently asked

ChatGPT humanizer questions, answered

What is a ChatGPT humanizer?

A ChatGPT humanizer is a rewriting tool that takes ChatGPT output and changes the properties that make it recognizable as ChatGPT: sentence length that barely varies, a narrow set of recurring connectives, and paragraphs built to the same three-part template. It does not change what the text says. It changes how the text moves.

Does ChatGPT have a humanizer?

Yes. OpenAI ships one inside ChatGPT under its writing tools, with three modes labelled "Shorten text", "Improve clarity" and "Make it original". It is genuinely useful for clarity work. The thing to read before pasting an unpublished draft into it is the line on that page stating that chats may be reviewed and used to improve OpenAI models.

How do I humanize ChatGPT text?

Rebuild three things: sentence length variance, the connective vocabulary, and paragraph shape. Then add at least one concrete detail the model could not have produced, such as a number from your own work or a specific example. Synonym swapping does not do this, which is why running a draft through a paraphraser often leaves the underlying pattern untouched.

What is the best ChatGPT humanizer?

The honest answer is that they all perform the same operation, and the differences that matter are price per thousand words, whether output is capped, and what the tool does with your text afterwards. Treat any specific detector percentage as marketing rather than a specification, because no vendor controls the detectors and the largest one publishes no public checker to test against.

Can ChatGPT humanize essays?

It can rewrite them, and its own writing tool will do a competent clarity pass. What it will not do is deliberately introduce the sentence-length variance and structural irregularity that distinguish human drafting, because producing fluent, uniform prose is the behaviour it was trained toward in the first place.

Is there a ChatGPT humanizer extension?

Browser extensions in this category exist, and the tradeoff is worth understanding before you install one. An extension that rewrites in place needs read and write access to the pages you use it on, which for most people includes their email and their document editor. A web tool you paste into asks for nothing.

Can AI detectors still detect humanized ChatGPT text?

Sometimes, and nobody can tell you the rate honestly. Detectors are retrained without announcement, and Turnitin has said it trains against "leading paraphraser and bypasser tools" while deliberately refusing to name them, on the grounds that a published list "would make it easier for students to evade our system". Any site quoting you a guaranteed pass rate against a named detector is guessing.

How do I make ChatGPT sound more human when it writes?

Constrain it at the prompt. Give it a sentence-length instruction, ban the connectives you keep seeing, feed it a sample of your own writing, and ask for a specific person as the reader. This gets you a better first draft, though it does not eliminate the underlying uniformity, which is why a rewriting pass still helps.

Does humanizing ChatGPT text change the meaning?

It should not, and any tool that does has broken the draft rather than improved it. Quoted material, reference entries, figures and names come through untouched here. Read the output anyway. That check takes a minute and catches the one case in fifty where a rewrite has flattened a distinction you needed.

Is a ChatGPT humanizer free?

Some are, including the one inside ChatGPT and the Grammarly web tool. Ours is not: plans start at $9 a month billed yearly for 15,000 words. Free tools in this category fund themselves through word caps, advertising, or by retaining what you submit, so the question worth asking is not the price but what happens to your text.

Publish ChatGPT drafts that do not read like ChatGPT

Paste in a paragraph and watch which parts of it change. The tone selector matters more than most people expect.
