ZeroGPT is the least reliable of the major AI detectors. Controlled testing puts its overall accuracy around 68 to 74 percent, and its false-positive rate on real human writing runs 15 to 25 percent, with some tests measuring 26 to 33 percent. As a free tool it is fine for a rough gut check, but a ZeroGPT score carries almost no weight as evidence, and treating it as proof has flagged plenty of genuine human work.

What ZeroGPT is
ZeroGPT is a no-login AI detector with a free tier, which is exactly why it is everywhere. Students paste essays into it before submitting, and nervous writers check drafts against it because it costs nothing. It reads the same signals as the paid tools: how predictable your word choices are and how much your sentence rhythm varies. Smooth, even text reads as machine-written; bumpy, varied text reads as human. The difference is that ZeroGPT runs a lighter model than the commercial detectors, and its accuracy shows it.
One thing worth correcting, because most write-ups of ZeroGPT still describe it as purely free: it is now a freemium product. Read off its own pricing page on July 31, 2026, the free tier is advertised as "$0 forever" and paid plans start at $12.99 a month, or $119.88 a year with the annual discount, with a second tier at $22.99 a month. Paid plans allow 100,000 characters per AI detection and bundle a summarizer, paraphraser, grammar checker and translator with their own separate word caps. None of that changes the accuracy picture below, which is about the model rather than the plan. It does mean the "it is free, so of course it is rough" defence is now only half true.
How accurate is ZeroGPT on AI text?
On clean, unedited AI output, ZeroGPT catches roughly 75 to 88 percent, but across controlled tests on mixed samples its overall accuracy falls to about 68 to 74 percent. That is a meaningful gap below the paid detectors even on the easy case. It reads newer GPT-4-class output more reliably than older text, and it loses ground fast on anything edited.
Light paraphrasing is often enough to fool it. In several tests, minor human edits pushed detection below 60 percent. Because the underlying model is simpler, small changes to rhythm and word choice move the score more than they would on a stronger detector. ZeroGPT is the easiest of the major scanners to slip past, and also the easiest to trigger by accident.
The false-positive problem
The number that matters is how often ZeroGPT calls real human writing AI, and this is where it fails hardest.

A false-positive rate between 15 and 25 percent means one in four to one in six genuine human texts gets flagged. No decision with real consequences, an integrity case, a hiring screen, a client rejection, should ever rest on a number that unreliable. Even ZeroGPT's own interface frames its output loosely, and for good reason.
Why human writing gets flagged so often
The failures concentrate on formal, structured writing.
