Google Docs has no built-in AI detector. Google Classroom's originality reports, which are the closest thing Google ships, compare a submission against webpages, books and previous student work to find copying. They do not score for AI. Because AI-generated text is original rather than copied, a paper written entirely by a model can pass an originality report with a clean result.
That surprises people on both sides of the desk. Students assume Docs is watching, and teachers assume the originality report covers AI. Neither is right, and the gap matters because the thing Google Docs does keep is far more revealing than any detector score.
Does Google Docs detect AI?
No. There is no feature inside Google Docs that scans your document and reports whether a model wrote it. Google has not shipped one, and none is documented in the Docs or Workspace help pages. If you have seen a screenshot of an AI score inside a Google Doc, it came from a browser extension or a Workspace Marketplace add-on rather than from Google.
The irony is that Google ships the opposite feature. Gemini's writing help lives inside Docs, so the same product that will draft a paragraph for you has no interest in telling anyone afterward that it did. Google's position on machine-written text is consistent across its products: it treats the output as your document.
What do Google Classroom originality reports actually check?
This is where most of the confusion starts, because originality reports sound like they should cover AI. Read off Google's own Classroom help documentation on August 10, 2026, they "Compare a student's Google Docs, Google Slides, and Microsoft Word files against webpages and books on the internet." If a school administrator has switched it on, they also check against previous student submissions from that school or district.
That is plagiarism detection. It works by matching your text against text that already exists somewhere. Nothing in the documentation mentions AI-generated content, because the technique cannot find it: a model composes new sentences rather than copying existing ones, so there is nothing for a matching engine to match against.
The practical consequence is blunt. A student who pastes an entire essay out of ChatGPT and submits it will very likely get a low similarity score, because the text is genuinely not copied from anywhere. A student who writes an essay themselves but quotes heavily and cites badly can score much worse. The originality report is measuring something real, but it is not measuring the thing many teachers now think it measures.
The limits nobody mentions
The same documentation sets out constraints worth knowing, whichever side of this you are on:

The 5-assignment cap on the free education tier is the detail with the most real-world effect. Plenty of schools are running the entry edition, which means the check most teachers assume is automatic is actually rationed to a handful of assignments a term.
How do teachers detect AI in Google Docs then?
Mostly the same way they do it anywhere else, which is a mix of a detector their institution licensed and their own reading of the work. By adding something Google does not provide. Schools that want AI detection integrate a third-party tool: Turnitin through the LMS, or GPTZero, Copyleaks and Pangram through browser extensions and Workspace add-ons. That is a deliberate choice a school has to make and pay for, not a default.
Those tools carry the accuracy problems every statistical detector carries. Published false positive rates for the same handful of detectors range from 0.004 percent to 61.3 percent depending on how long the passage is and who wrote it, and the highest figures come from testing on essays by non-native English speakers. Can Google Docs version history show you used AI?
Yes, and this is the part that actually matters. Docs keeps a running version history of every document, and a teacher or manager who opens it sees how the file came into existence. A document written over five sessions, with sentences reworked, paragraphs moved and typos fixed, looks completely different from a document that appeared as one 900-word block at 11:52pm.
That single paste is the tell. It is not a probability score and there is nothing to argue with, which is why version history is more persuasive in a real dispute than any detector reading. Why a rewrite cannot fix a paste
We sell an AI humanizer, so we should be direct about the boundary. Rewriting changes what a detector measures, because a detector only ever sees finished text. It does nothing to version history. If your document shows a single paste and nothing else, a rewrite of the words inside that paste leaves the paste exactly where it was. Anyone telling you a humanizer protects you from provenance is selling you the wrong remedy, and we would rather say so than take the sale.
Is there an AI detector for Google Slides?
No, and the reason is the same one that applies to Docs. Slides files are covered by Classroom originality reports, since Google's Classroom documentation says those reports "Compare a student's Google Docs, Google Slides, and Microsoft Word files against webpages and books on the internet". But that is matching, not AI scoring. A deck whose speaker notes were written entirely by a model contains nothing copied from anywhere, so it comes back clean.
Slides is also awkward territory for the detectors schools do buy. Turnitin, the most widely deployed of them in United States higher education, only scores prose sentences inside paragraphs, requires at least 300 words of it, and explicitly excludes bullet points and tables from the calculation. A slide deck is mostly bullets. Even where a school runs a paid detector, a presentation is close to the least scoreable thing a student can hand in.
Does Google Classroom detect AI?
Classroom itself does not. Originality reports are its only content-checking feature and they look for matching text. A school that wants AI detection has to buy it separately and connect it, which is a purchasing decision rather than a Google feature.
That pattern holds across every major learning platform. The LMS moves files and records timestamps, and any AI scoring comes from a third-party product bolted onto it. What about outside the classroom?
The same mechanics apply at work, with different stakes. Employers reviewing writing samples, agencies checking freelance deliverables and clients reviewing drafts all have access to the same third-party detectors and the same version history. Office document work increasingly runs through automation anyway, from tools that draft and file documents to an AI office assistant that handles the routine paperwork, which makes a blanket rule against machine assistance harder to justify every year.
For professional writing the useful question is not whether a detector can catch you. It is whether the draft is any good. Unedited model output tends toward even sentence length, hedged phrasing and a register that signals nobody in particular wrote it, and that costs you the reader well before it costs you a detector score.
